Dr Essuman-Quainoo joined us as Lecturer II at SSPS in September

Dr Essuman-Quainoo’s research focuses on urban ecosystems and the interplay between nature and society. His work has been published in prestigious journals. He combines empathy and organisational skills to create a supportive learning environment.

He obtained his PhD from EdUHK in 2024. He holds a master’s degree in Ecology and Nature Management from Kazan Federal University and a bachelor’s degree in Environment and Resource Management from the University for Development Studies, Ghana.

He is the recipient of Greenbuild 2023 Scholarship (USA Green Building Council), Young Green Warrior award (World Green Infrastructure Congress 2023, Berlin, Germany), and Outstanding Presentation Award (FLASS, EdUHK).

He is the youngest Board Member of the World Green Infrastructure Network and serves as President of its Emerging Professionals Chapter (CEP), where he passionately advocates for sustainable cities on a global scale.

Miss Chan Wing-yue Jade Bernadette joined HPE in August 2024

Bernadette is a registered Play and Creative Arts Therapist with Play Therapy United Kingdom, specialising in therapeutic interventions that foster emotional and social development in children. She is also a certified Mountain Craft Coach with the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union, merging her passion for outdoor activities with a commitment to empowering individuals through adventurous learning experiences.

With her extensive experience in coaching mountaineering, Bernadette has developed her teaching skills in outdoor class management and individualised student support. She actively seeks professional development opportunities to enhance her teaching strategies. Currently, Bernadette focuses on facilitating therapeutic play training.

Miss Krystal Hui Ka-wai joined HPE in August 2024

Krystal has been working in the higher education sector since graduation. With a focus on Student Affairs, she has developed a solid foundation in addressing student matters and providing administrative support to different programs. Her experience includes collaborating with diverse student populations, promoting student activities, and enhancing student engagement initiatives. She is passionate about creating positive experiences for students and contributing to their success. Krystal looks forward to leveraging her skills and knowledge to further support the needs of students.

Professor Wang Minjuan joined us as Chair Professor of Emerging Technologies and Future Education at MIT; Associate Co-Director of the Academy for Applied Policy Studies and Education Futures in August 2024

Minjuan joins us from San Diego, California, where she was a tenured professor and programme head of Learning Design and Technology, in the flagship campus of the California State University. Her research specialities are multidisciplinary, focusing on STEM Education, Future education, Metaverse and immersive learning, and the design and implementation of artificial intelligence for teaching, learning, and training.

She is an internationally recognised scholar who gives keynote speeches worldwide and publishes extensively in high-impact journals such as Nature-HSSC, Computers and Education, and British Journal of Education Technology (BJET). She is an active member of the IEEE Education Society and currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for an interdisciplinary and indexed (SSCI, SCI, & EI) journal—IEEE-TLT (Transactions on Learning Technologies). As of 2024, her scholarly work has received more than 8,000 citations, making her one of the high-impact authors in the realm of digital learning and technology. In her spare time, Minjuan practices Flamenco dance and enjoys exploring international culture. Minjuan is thrilled to join the MIT community and is eager to contribute to its growth and success.

Dr HOSSAIN Md Farid joined us as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at SSPS in August 2024

Dr Md Farid Hossain is an RGC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies at FLASS. He is an Associate Professor (now on study leave) in the Department of Government and Politics at Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Before joining Jahangirnagar University in 2014, he was a Lecturer and Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh (2011-2014). He was a Visiting Scholar for the Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI) Scholar Program for the Institute on U.S. Foreign Policy by the Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), Bureau of the U.S. Department of State at the University of Delaware and worked as a Research Fellow at INTI International University, Malaysia.

Dr Hossian’s research interests include China and the Global Political Economy, BRI, Chinese Soft Power, Chinese Infrastructure, Investment and Capital Flows in South Asia and U.S. Foreign Policy. He published widely in the areas of international political economy, Chinese soft power, and China-US strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region. His articles appear in leading international journals such as Millennial Asia (Sage), Asian Politics and Policy (Wiley), Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management (Wiley), Springer Nature, and various Bangladeshi journals.

Dr Andy Chiu joined us as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at SSPS in July 2024

Dr Chiu is an alumnus of the Department of Social Sciences, a predecessor of the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies of EdUHK. He obtained his PhD from the University of Warwick in 2022, and worked in the Academy of Hong Kong Studies, EdUHK as a post-doctoral fellow in 2023. He has been awarded the RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship 2024/2025 to join the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies in the summer of 2024.

His research focuses on the sociology of sports, covering issues such as educational inequalities, race and ethnicity, social inclusion, sport for development and peace, and sporting nationalism.

Dr Li Chen joined us as an Assistant Professor at SSPS in July 2024

Dr Li is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies at EdUHK. Prior to joining EdUHK, he was Associate Professor in the School of Geography at Nanjing Normal University (2021-2024); Postdoctoral Fellow in the Institute of Future Cities at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2019-2021); Senior Research Officer in the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University (2019); Research Fellow in the School of Geography at the University of Melbourne (2019).

Dr Li completed his PhD (Human Geography), Master of Environment and a Bachelor of Science (Degree with Honours) at the University of Melbourne.

His research interests cover urban (re)development, urban governance, power, conflict and justice, social sustainability, and sports geography. He has published widely in leading international journals such as Habitat International, Urban Studies, Journal of Contemporary China, and Eurasian Geography and Economics. He serves as an Honorary Fellow in the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Melbourne and sits on the youth editorial board of Chinese Geographical Science.

Dr Sabrina Su Xuebing joined us as an Assistant Professor at SSPS in July 2024

Dr Su has an interdisciplinary background, with professional training in social work, sociology, organisational psychology, and career guidance and counseling. Her research studies reflect this diverse expertise, covering a range of topics related to youth work, career support services, organisational behaviors, workplace wellbeing, and capacity building among frontline workers.

Across these areas, Dr Su has developed innovative concepts, such as collective psychological ownership (CPO), experience-driven recognition (EDR), and more enabling others (MEO). These concepts aim to promote both individual and shared agency, with the goal of enhancing the sustainable career and life development of diverse groups of people in various contexts.

Additionally, Dr Su has developed an experience-driven capability approach to support the career and life development of youth facing vulnerabilities. This framework comprises four domains: recognition, exposures, self-growth, and transferability (REST). At the core of this approach is Dr Su's belief that expanding the sources of recognition can be a creative pathway to co-create an enabling and inclusive environment, particularly for young people and young professionals, to support them in daring to aspire and achieve their goals.

Dr Li Liguan joined as an Assistant Professor at SES in July 2024

Dr Li received her BSc and MSc in Environmental Science, and obtained her PhD in Environmental Engineering from The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2016. After that, she was awarded the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and pursued Postdoc research in microbial ecology in the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) from 2016-2020. Pior to joining FLASS, she has been working as a Research Assistant Professor at HKU.

Her overarching research interests revolve around environmental microbiome. She uses a combination of modern experimental methods and advanced bioinformatic approaches to address fundamental and applied microbial ecology. Specifically, she is interested in exploring the potential of environmental microbiology research for public health management. Her research of environmental microbiology in the context of human health and sustainable environment aims to tackle significant challenges facing humanity today like infectious disease, antibiotic resistance and climate change.

Dr Li is committed to delivering excellence in teaching and research. She believes that the vibrant teaching and research environment at EdUHK will foster numerous productive collaborations in the near future.

Dr Wang Yue joined us as an Associate Professor at MIT in July 2024

Dr Wang obtained bachelor's and master's degrees from Peking University and PhD degree from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His research focuses on deep learning and natural language processing, and how they can be applied in business analytics, healthcare management, and education. He is excited to join MIT department as he has a deep love for mathematics. At one point, he considered pursuing a PhD in mathematics but decided on a different path. Nevertheless, he still enjoys working with mathematicians, and his Erdős number is 3. He also appreciates Chinese art, especially calligraphy and painting. In his free time, he enjoys reading detective fictions.

In the future, Dr Wang hopes to continue developing innovative research in deep learning and natural language processing, exploring new applications for these technologies in various fields, particularly education. He is eager to collaborate with new colleagues and contribute to the academic community in the department. He also looks forward to inspiring and mentoring students, and helping them achieve their goals and discover their passions.
